Content Strike Friday March 21st [19 Mar 2008|10:48pm]

The one-day content strike is on for this Friday, March 21, from midnight GMT to midnight GMT.

For 24 hours, we will not post or comment to LJ. Not in our own journals, not in communities. Not publicly, privately, or under friends-lock.

This is a protest that will have long-lasting effects, showing up forever in the daily posting statistics.

This is a protest that will not harm LJ in the long run, as leaving LJ might do.

This is a protest that will demonstrate the power of community, as all users unite to support Basic users and the concept of adfree space.

This is a protest that will educate the new owners that LJ is driven by user-created content.

How Can I Help?

DO post about this in your own LJ.
DO post and comment about it in appropriate communities.
DO remember that it's based on Greenwich Mean Time, which may not be your local time.
DO turn off LoudTwitter and your RSS feeds for 24 hours.
DO feel free to friend me for updates, and defriend when the strike is over.

DON'T forget to get permission from community mods before making an off-topic post or comment about the strike.
DON'T be spammy with your posts or comments about the strike.
DON'T forget to turn your LoudTwitter and RSS feeds back on when the strike is over.

i'm thinking about ordering a western digital my book pro external drive, but i'm reading reviews that say it goes to sleep after approx 10 minutes of not being used. if an external drive is sleeping, can users on soulseek access it? if not, that will be a problem.

thanks for all comments in advance.

i've had this problem a handful of times in the past. note A4, A5 and B5. i cannot download these files, i get the error "remote: file not shared." the other files download fine, but these files instantly come up with this error - without even attempting to process. i'm assuming the character display has something to do with this. i think the files displayed are either in german or swedish, but i can't tell because on soulseek they show up scrambled. is there any way to toy with soulseek character display in an attempt to get these files to display the correct titles and download? any other possible solutions to this problem?

note: this person is on nicotine, might that have something to do with it?

Odd question [29 Jan 2007|10:15pm]

I use Soulseek pretty frequently and without problems. However, in the last month, I can add stuff to my queue and download, but if I close the program, they won't be in the queue anymore when I reopen the program. Also, a lot of things that download stay in the queue as not yet downloaded when I restart. It's like my queue has one memory of files that it comes back to everytime I restart the program.

Any clues anybody?

mac? [23 Jan 2007|12:04pm]

I'm a big souldseek fan...but I finally got a new computer, and it's a mac. What can I do? I miss soulseek. Is it possible to have soulseek on a mac? If not, is there a similar program for macs? I'm semi-mac-illiterate too, if that means anything, but I'm learning.

that's my slsk account, send me a message and i'll add you
check my user info on here (livejournal) for a link to what i've been listening to, to get a small idea of what i have

windows sp2 users? [05 Jul 2006|07:37pm]

okay, so i just read the "read me" file that comes bundled with the soulseek test version and it says to visit this site if you're running windows xp service pack 2. i'm not currently running sp2, but the version i am running now is bootleg and i would like to purchase a version of windows xp, possibly oem because that is more affordable.

i'm not sure exactly what the given site implies, does that mean i won't be able to run the test version with sp2, or that i won't be able to run any version fo slsk? and has anyone using sp2 had any problems with soulseek, if so, how did you get around them?

edit: has anyone tried this patch and were there any problems??

thank you!

[ mood | aggravated ]

This is messed up soulseek hasn't been working for me for quite some time. I can't download or search but people that are downloading from me I can browse. BUT I can't download off of them either. And I always get disconnected and the router is forwarding the correct ports. When I try to send a message to someone downloading from me I get this message: Could not send:

This is on XP Pro SP2, no firewall, 3MB DSL, SLSK 156c, I've tried 157 test 6, 7, and 8 as well. Same results.

Here's the Diagnostics Info

SoulSeek 156 & 157 test 8 Searching Issues [29 Apr 2006|12:01pm]

Issues with both Soulseek 156, and 157 test 8.
Windows XP Pro SP 2
AVG 7.1 Free
Windows Firewall with exception rules created for SoulSeek ports
Linksys Router with all UDP & TCP ports forwarded to me
Upped the Max TCP connections to 50 with the util listed in the SLSK FAQ.

The issue I'm having is with both SoulSeek 156, and 157 test 8.

I can connect to the server, it is shown as up and running.
Checking priveleges status never yields results.
ALL users on friends list (about 70) always appear offline.
Searches do not yield results even after letting sit for hours.
Chat Rooms appear empty no matter which one is joined.
No one is searching me/I don't see "returned search results for..." @ the bottom of 157 t8
No one is downloading off of me.

UnInstall/ReInstall of 157 t8 (backing up and restoring CFG files) (Failed to fix)
UnInstall/ReInstall of 157 t8 (backing up and restoring ONLY User Info, Friends, & Shares CFG files)
UnInstall/ReInstall of 157 t8 (working from scratch no CFG files restored)

Install 156 (working from scratch no CFG files restored)
UnInstall/ReInstall of 156 (backing up and restoring ONLY User Info, Friends, & Shares CFG files)

Any help or insight into this would be appreciated. I do pay for priveleges not that it matters... I'd be willing to pay $20 bucks just to get the problem fixed and get soulseek working again.

[23 Apr 2006|05:05pm]

I am a very stupid person.

When I want to use SS effectively, I need to unplug my router and jack my computer directly into the information super-highway.

As you can probably imagine, this pisses off my roommate quite a bit.

How can I bypass that whole "SoulSeek sucks if you're using a router and are too stupid to know how to deal with the situation" situation?

Anyone have a good guide for complete idiots that I could use?

i'm not sure if i get how this server stuff works. the newest beta version of soulseek is on a different server than the current stable release, or so i've been told. if i switch over to the beta test version, will i still be able to access the files i have on my queue currently, and contact people on my current userlist?

have any of you ever shared an external drive on soulseek or another filesharing program? within the next couple of weeks i'm updating to fios (basically dsl) and 512mb of RAM, and i'm hoping with this i'll be able to share my external drive without a problem. basically i just want to see if this will be possible without drastically slowing down my computer. the drive has USB 2.0 and 7200 RPM, if that information helps. thanks.

I didn't think this was possible but... [08 Jan 2006|10:06pm]

Download speeds of 600+ kb/sec!

(Apparently God uses the SlSk.)

(Or was that Satan?)

(I can never tell for sure.)
